Guidelines For Set Subject Competitions

These are suggestions only!

Photographers are encouraged to use their own imagination and creativity in their images


  • The set subjects were suggested by club members and voted for by the club as a whole
  • The guidelines are suggestions only and are open to interpretation and creativity by the photographer
  • If any doubt, Google the subject for inspiration & examples, or ask in club for other members’ views
  • Judge has final say on the night of the competition

2020-21 Season

Due to restrictions on face to face meetings there will be no print competitions in the 2020-21 season all competitions will be PDI. Please see club calendar and PhotoEntry for submission and judging dates

  • TOC1 PDI Night
    • Night photography refers to the activity of capturing images outdoors at night, between dusk and dawn
  • TOC2 PDI Abstract
    • Abstract photography is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials

  • TOC4 PDI Portraits
    • Portrait photography is a photograph of a person or group of people that captures the personality of the subject by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait picture might be artistic, or it might be clinical, as part of a medical study
  • TOC5 PDI Macro
    •  Macro photography is about photographing objects that are very close to the lens, the film or the sensor. Using the classic definition, in macro photography the image shown on the film plane (or sensor) is nearly as big as the object photographed.

    • Urban photography is an interdisciplinary field of visual practice concerned with the evocation and representation of urban spaces and the lives of those living, working and moving through such spaces

  • TOC1 PDI Plant life
    • Plant life photography is an exercise in celebrating colour and/or texture. Whether it’s the vibrant red of a rose or the deep purple of a violet, colourful flowers and/or textures of leaves and petals
  • TOC2 Print Street/reportage
    • Street photography, also sometimes called candid photography, is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places
    • Reportage photography, or what’s also known as documentary photography, is a photographic style that captures a moment or event in a narrative fashion, i.e., images that tell a story

    • Sports photography refers to the genre of photography that covers all types of sports

    • Photographs taken at the beginning, or end of the day showing the rising, or setting sun

    • Architectural photography is the photographing of buildings and similar structures that are both aesthetically pleasing and accurate representations of their subjects.
