Guidelines For Set Subject Competitions

These are suggestions only!

Photographers are encouraged to use their own imagination and creativity in their images


  • The set subjects were suggested by club members and voted for by the club as a whole
  • The guidelines are suggestions only and are open to interpretation and creativity by the photographer
  • If any doubt, Google the subject for inspiration & examples, or ask in club for other members’ views
  • Judge has final say on the night of the competition

2021-22 Season

  • TOC1 PDI Plant Life
    • Plant life photography is an exercise in celebrating colour and/or texture. Whether it’s the vibrant red of a rose or the deep purple of a violet, colourful flowers and/or textures of leaves and petals
  • TOC2 Print Street/Reportage
    • Street photography, also sometimes called candid photography, is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places
    • Reportage photography, or what’s also known as documentary photography, is a photographic style that captures a moment or event in a narrative fashion, i.e., images that tell a story
  • TOC3 PDI Sports & Action
    • Sports photography refers to the genre of photography that covers all types of sports
  • TOC4 Print Landscape UK
  • TOC5 PDI Sunrise/Sunset
    • Photographs taken at the beginning, or end of the day showing the rising, or setting sun
  • TOC6 Print Architecture
    • Architectural photography is the photographing of buildings and similar structures that are both aesthetically pleasing and accurate representations of their subjects
